History of Bari International Airport
In the 1930s, Regia Aeronautica constructed what is now known as Bari Airport from what was previously a military airstrip. It was taken by the British Eighth Army in late September 1943 and converted into an Allied airport during World War II's Italian Campaign.
The Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces operated it until the end of World War II in May 1945. Operational airfields are located at the Twelfth and Fifteenth air forces.
For the Italian Cobelligerent Air Force (ACI), as well as the South African Air Force (AFS), the airfield was also used for training purposes (Aeronautica del Sud). After World War II, it was transferred to the Italian Republic's postwar Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana).
During the 1960s, Alitalia began operating regular flights to Rome, Catania, Palermo, and Ancona, as well as Venice from the airport. Fokker F27 planes were used by ATI to take over the routes. The new DC-9-30 at ATI necessitated the construction of a new runway.
However, the military facility also continued to serve as a passenger terminal. Originally designed to help as a cargo terminal, a brand-new structure was constructed in 1981. It was still the airport's new passenger terminal.
A single main terminal building currently accommodates all of the airport's amenities and services at Bari International Airport. Passengers can take advantage of a wide selection of amenities and services, including a duty-free shopping area and numerous stores and restaurants.
Bus service and a taxi stand are among the several modes of transportation available at the airport. Services for renting a car are also accessible in this area. Several public transportation options make the airport easily accessible to the city center.
